Fernando Rosado, our editor and founder, has died. He now rests with the angels but the newspaper he founded will continue to operate under the capable leadership of his wife, Rosalina Contreras.
Aside from his many accomplishments and personal triumphs, Fernando Rosado was a personable and an honorable man. I first met him in 1997 while working for another company. What I found was a man who took people as they were and treated them fairly. He never asked about a man’s past. He didn’t particularly care if a man had connections or if a man was an outcast. What was important to Fernando, or Freddy as he was called by his many friends, was how a man treated him. This characteristic, so rare these days, made Freddy accessible to a great many people who had no other voice.
Freddy was a loyal friend. One could count on him — another rare quality these days — and, if Freddy was your friend, it didn’t matter who your enemy was. Freddy would try to help you.
As we close out the era of our founder, we wish to speak of his fascinating history and of the many accomplishments of this distinguished American citizen, proud Cuban patriot, and pillar of the Hispanic newspaper industry.
Freddy was well known in both entertainment and political circles. The photo archives at El Bohemio News are filled with photos of Freddy taken with presidents, governors, mayors, actors and entertainers. He even held the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the militia of the State of Alabama — an official appointment made personally by then governor George C. Wallace.
